Carbon Farming Training Breaks New Ground on Yawuru Country

Yawuru (Broome), Western Australia – Wednesday 22 October 2025

For the first time, nationally accredited carbon farming training has taken place on Yawuru Country in Broome – marking a significant milestone for the Kimberley and for climate action across northern Australia.

After well over a decade of Aboriginal carbon farming in the region, this historic gathering brought together participants from a range of key Indigenous organisations who live, work, and care for Country. Together, they are building the skills, knowledge, and leadership to strengthen carbon projects that deliver cultural, environmental, social, and economic benefits.

The training brought together an extraordinary coalition of passionate advocates, representing the Dambimangari Traditional Owners and Rangers, Wilinggin Traditional Owners and Senior Rangers, Balanggarra Traditional Owners and Directors, Kwini Rangers, and the committed staff from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).

This was not just another training session; it was a meaningful step toward Caring for Country – a powerful commitment to preserving our invaluable cultural heritage and the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds us.

Every participant contributed their unique insights and expertise, creating a vibrant network dedicated to sustainable stewardship. This is our moment to ignite a movement – one that not only respects our shared history but also actively protects and enhances the environment for all.

Rowan Foley, CEO of the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation, said the milestone reflects years of hard work by Traditional Owners and their organisations to lead the way in carbon farming.

“This is history in the making. For the first time, nationally accredited carbon farming training has been delivered on Yawuru Country. It’s a powerful moment because it strengthens Indigenous leadership in carbon farming and ensures that Traditional Owner voices remain at the centre of Australia’s carbon future,” said Mr Foley.

Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Darryl Smith said the training was an important opportunity for local rangers to build their skills and share knowledge with their communities.

‘I want to thank the Kwini Rangers for participating in the on behalf of Balanggarra. It was good to see the rangers joining in the course, they got a lot out of it, and they then can take what they have learnt back to the community. They can now work with other organisations and develop those skills in carbon farming.’

The Aboriginal Carbon Foundation is proud to walk alongside Traditional Owners and organisations leading this important work, as carbon farming continues to create pathways that heal land, waters, and people while supporting strong futures for Indigenous communities.

Together, we can inspire future generations to join us in this crucial mission. Let us seize this opportunity to transform our dedication into action, ensuring that our rich heritage and diverse ecosystems thrive for years to come. Join us in this vital journey – we are stronger together, and our collective impact can make a difference!
