Indigenous Women Leading the Way in Sustainability: Honouring Knowledge, Leadership, and Innovation

By Mahala Strohfeldt

In the wake of the 2025 International Women’s Day celebrations across the country, the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation (AbCF) proudly acknowledges the profound leadership of Indigenous Australian women in sustainability. For tens of thousands of years, they have been the caretakers of Country, applying deep cultural knowledge to protect land, water, and communities. Today, their wisdom is shaping a sustainable future—one that blends traditional ecological practices with cutting-edge innovation to heal both the environment and society.

As the Communications Coordinator at AbCF, I have the privilege of sharing stories that showcase the incredible leadership of First Nations peoples in sustainability. Among the most inspiring voices rising in this space are Indigenous Australian women—strong, knowledgeable, and deeply connected to Country.

Across the continent, a new wave of Indigenous women is shaping the future of environmental stewardship. These leaders are not just participating in sustainability; they are redefining it. Grounded in generations of cultural knowledge and carrying the ancient wisdom of ancestors, they bring an approach that weaves together environmental, social, and economic wellbeing, ensuring Country, people, and communities thrive together.

Guardians of Land, Water, and Culture

Indigenous women have always been at the forefront of environmental stewardship. As knowledge holders and custodians of Country, they have nurtured ecosystems through practices such as sustainable harvesting, water conservation, and cultural burning. Their ability to read the land, understand seasonal changes, and manage biodiversity is now widely recognised as essential in tackling climate change and restoring degraded landscapes.

Traditional fire management techniques, like cool burning, have long been used by Indigenous women to reduce wildfire risks, regenerate native vegetation, and maintain ecological balance. Today, these time-honoured practices are being integrated into national conservation policies, demonstrating the invaluable role of Indigenous science in modern environmental management.

Leading the Way in the Carbon Economy

As the carbon industry grows, Indigenous women are stepping into leadership roles to ensure that carbon farming and environmental markets remain ethical and community driven. Through initiatives like the AbCF’s carbon farming and sustainability projects, these women are creating economic opportunities while strengthening cultural governance and self-determination.

By advocating for policy changes, leading training programs, and managing carbon projects, Indigenous women are proving that sustainability must go beyond emissions reduction—it must be about healing land, water, and people. Their leadership ensures that environmental initiatives align with cultural values, fostering long-term prosperity for communities while safeguarding Country for future generations.

Innovators Bridging Traditional Knowledge and Science

Across Australia, Indigenous women are pioneering the integration of cultural knowledge with contemporary science and technology. From using drones to monitor biodiversity and track environmental changes to incorporating Indigenous land management principles into global sustainability frameworks, these leaders are redefining conservation and climate resilience.

Their work is shifting the sustainability narrative from one of extraction and short-term gain to one of care, reciprocity, and long-term custodianship. By merging traditional insights with scientific methodologies, they are demonstrating how holistic approaches can yield more effective and sustainable environmental solutions. We are caretakers and custodians of country, caring for the land and waters and the communities that make up our vast country. But we are also the scientists, CEOs and innovators, emerging leaders inspiring new ideas and ways of thinking and doing that are creating the pathways for the future.

Champions of Climate Resilience and Community-Led Solutions

Indigenous women are also at the frontline of climate action, developing practical solutions that protect their communities from the effects of climate change. Whether restoring wetlands, regenerating native vegetation, or advocating for sustainable economic pathways, they are creating resilience strategies grounded in thousands of years of lived experience.

Through mentorship and collaboration, these women are empowering the next generation of sustainability leaders. By ensuring that cultural knowledge continues to inform climate policies and land management practices, they are securing a future where Indigenous-led solutions play a central role in global environmental efforts.

A Future Led by Indigenous Women and Knowledge

As we honour the recent International Women’s Day, we must recognise the vital contributions of Indigenous women in sustainability. Their leadership, innovation, and deep connection to Country provide a powerful blueprint for a just and regenerative future. Their voices in governance, conservation, and climate action continue to reshape national and international conversations on environmental responsibility.

We are proud to stand alongside these extraordinary women, amplifying their voices and supporting their work. By investing in Indigenous-led sustainability initiatives, we are not only strengthening communities but also building a future where the wisdom of First Nations women lights the path towards a thriving planet.

Today, and every day, let’s celebrate, honour, and uplift Indigenous Australian women leading the way in sustainability. Their knowledge is a gift to us all, and their leadership is shaping a future where people, Country, and culture thrive together.
